Schurz Communications has launched "Flight Mobile," a new mobile offering featuring by-the-gig and unlimited plans. Flight Mobile is based on the National Content & Technology Cooperative's (NCTC's) MVNO and MVNE agreements with AT&T and Reach.

Schurz said Antietam Broadband, one of the service provider brands under its umbrella, has initially introduced Flight Mobile in Washington and Carroll County, Maryland. Schurz will test and deploy the new mobile offering to other Schurz properties later this year and into 2025, the company told Light Reading via an email exchange.

Other Schurz properties/brands include Burlington Telecom (Burlington, Vermont); Hiawatha Broadband (Winona, Minnesota); Long Lines Broadband (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa); NKTelco (New Knoxville, Ohio); and Orbitel Communications (Maricopa, Arizona).

As it's been with other US broadband operators, Schurz is selling mobile only to customers who bundle in the company's home broadband service.

Schurz expects to have about 300,000 locations connected to broadband as it completes a fiber project that aims to build out to 70,000 locations across its six broadband regions in 2024.

Flight Mobile is starting off with two by-the-gig and two unlimited plans:

  • Flight Essential: 3 Gigabytes for $20 per month per line

  • Flight Essential Plus: 5GB of data for $25 per month per line

  • Flight Premier: $29.99 per month per line. The service is billed as unlimited, though speeds are reduced when customers exceed 20GB of data in a month.

  • Flight Premier Plus: $39.99 per month, with speeds reduced when customers chew up 30GB in a month's period

All of Flight Mobile's no-contract plans come with unlimited talk and text and no fees for hotspot data. Customers can also buy "data top-ups" anytime, the company said.

As for device support, Flight Mobile is using a bring-your-own-device model for compatible smartphones.

Online device store

Flight Mobile has also launched an online device store that is initially selling a range of Samsung Android models, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24, among others.

Schurz said it is working with its partners to enhance and expand the availability of new device options for customers. NCTC has agreements with a pair of mobile device partners – the Associated Carrier Group (ACG) and Vertex Wireless.

Schurz is initially handling mobile service sales via the Flight Mobile website and has not announced if or when it might sell mobile at physical retail locations.

Schurz is part of a small but growing group of independent cable operators that are taking advantage of the NCTC's agreements with AT&T and Reach.

Other NCTC members that have launched or plan to launch mobile through those agreements include Allo Communications, Breezeline, TDS Telecom and TVS Cable. Ritter Communications and Midco are evaluating a potential move into mobile via the NCTC agreements.
