MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- cPacket Networks announced today the availability of its new, 320 Gigabit network appliance that provides complete packet inspection filtering, flexible traffic aggregation, selective duplication, and flow-based load balancing, as well as granular, wire-speed performance monitoring, for 32 10-gigabit links. It is based upon cPacket’s unique, 20-gigabit “complete packet inspection” chips, and Marvell’s 10 Gigabit Prestera® switch.

The product, called the “cVu320G”, provides a centralized-data-center 10-Gigabit monitoring solution and enables on-demand capacity management, resource allocation, and real-time troubleshooting of bursts and spikes for the data center, service provider, and telecommunication markets.

“Today’s data centers are struggling with the growing stampede to 10 Gigabit and the increasing virtualization of platforms and services”, says Rony Kay, president and chief technology officer of cPacket. “Monitoring tools have not kept pace with these developments, and, as a consequence, data centers are being overwhelmed with huge volumes of complex traffic, which they no longer have the visibility to control.”

The consequences, according to Kay, include intermittent and frequent congestion, performance degradation, and major service disruptions to end users that he says are becoming increasingly common.

The key for improvement and optimization is effective network visibility, drill down, and real-time performance measurement, says Kay. “Although existing switch span ports and aggregation switches dutifully attempt to provide network access to monitoring tools, protocol analyzers, and intrusion detection systems, the impact on them is like drinking from a fire hose – any early indicators and warning signs in the traffic that c

ould trigger a proactive response are simply drowned in the flood.”But no more. cPacket has combined its proprietary, 20 Gigabit complete packet inspection chips and software, the leading-edge Marvell Prestera CX 10 Gigabit switch, and an entirely new hardware-software system architecture, into a 32-port, 3U rack-mountable appliance that immediately resolves these issues, and then some.“We can simultaneously inspect every bit in every packet at full line rate, on each of the 10 Gigabit ports, and automatically take actions based upon what we observe,” says Kay.
