ATLANTA -- EarthLink (NASDAQ: ELNK), the nation’s next generation Internet service provider (ISP), today announced that it has been selected by the City of Pasadena to enter into negotiations to build, own and operate a 23 square mile citywide municipal wireless network.
The Wi-Fi mesh network will provide affordable, high-speed Internet access for residents, businesses and visitors to the home of the Rose Bowl. EarthLink will offer a symmetrical, 1 Mbps solution for customers and will work with the City to develop a digital inclusion program to offer certain qualifying residents discounted Internet access.
EarthLink has had a long-standing relationship with the City of Pasadena. The company has had a corporate presence in the market since 1994, and currently has over 400 employees working in the City.
"EarthLink is pleased to have been selected to unwire the City of Pasadena,” said Donald Berryman, executive vice president of EarthLink and president of the ISP’s municipal networks unit. “Our company has deep ties to the City, and we look forward to building a Wi-Fi network that delivers affordable broadband to its residents, visitors and city workers.”
“As WiFi continues to be the connecting technology of choice for consumers wanting flexible and convenient online access, we look forward to working with EarthLink to bring broadband Internet access to homes, businesses and City departments,” said John Pratt, chief information technology officer for the City of Pasadena.
