PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced the successful roll-out of digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband and wireless LAN (WLAN) systems with Cogetel, the leading ISP in Cambodia.

For this project, Alcatel has delivered public WLAN "hot spots" covering prime locations in Phnom Penh, the country's capital. The hot-spots are connected through Cogetel's DSL lines over a multiprotocol network provided by Alcatel. The flexibility afforded by the open service architecture enables Cogetel to deliver a wide array of revenue generating data services which can scale rapidly to keep up with ever-growing customer demand. Upon the system's completion, Cogetel became the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Cambodia to offer DSL broadband wireless Internet access, with integrated DSL and WLAN solution.

"Alcatel's end-to-end solution suits our specific needs in Cambodia," said Paul Blanche-Horgan, CEO Cogetel. "By combining the power of DSL and wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), our end-users can now enjoy high-speed connections, reliable service and mobility. We are impressed by Alcatel's response to our aggressive implementation schedule and their expertise in optimizing our investment. Alcatel is helping us to more effectively meet market demand," he added.

"Alcatel's public WLAN solution ideally complements DSL, offering more freedom to end-users and increasing Cogetel's revenue stream," said Michel Rahier, President of Alcatel's fixed networking activities. "We are extremely pleased with the success of this customized solution, and we believe it substantiates Alcatel's position as a leading provider of fixed and mobile broadband access solutions".

By offering operators a carrier-class, end-to-end solution that reduces operator investment and increases profitability, Alcatel is successfully introducing fixed and mobile operators to public WLAN services that complement and enhance existing service offerings. In addition, Alcatel's IEE 802.11 public WLAN solution includes WiFi radio access, authentication network elements and value-added applications that can cater to both small and large scale hot-spots*.

As the leading supplier of broadband access solutions, Alcatel holds a 37.6% share of the worldwide DSL market, according to August 2003 data from industry analyst Dell'Oro Group. To date, Alcatel has shipped more than 30 million lines - more than four times the volume of any other DSL equipment supplier. Alcatel's broadband access solutions are prominent in the networks of more than 70 of the world's largest carriers.
