Whom Do We Love to Hate?

10:00 AM -- The Wall Street Journal has a brand spanking new sports section, and it brings us some surprising baseball news:

Contrary to popular belief, the Yankees are only the fifth-most despised team in the majors, according to an Internet algorithm built by Nielsen Co. that analyzes how people feel about certain things.
Well, that sounds very scientifical.

And which team, you may ask, is the most hated? The Cleveland Freaking Indians!

Talk about kicking'em when they're down...

Maybe it's their mascot... But I really doubt that most people give the Tribe much thought at all.

They must have polled their fans.

I have two words for the National League - Brad Penny.  Better go look at his year last year.  Suddenly brilliant eh?

Check interleague play....

And for your As, go check out your As results against the Rays and the Jays.

Then realize that you are being overcharged for sub-par baseball.

Agreed on the relative merits of the 2 Bigs, as I like to call them.

The DH is an atrocity.

And be it noted that, while the AL has won 62 World Series (the plural of "series" is, of course, "series") and the Senior Circuit, as I like to call it, only 43, AL teams apart from the Yankers have won a mere 35.

The dread, hated Indians have 2.

And the Yanks have lost more Fall Classics, as I like to call them, than any other team.

No envy.  We got two World Series championships in five years.  I'd say that's a pretty good record.  Better than the Yankees.  The Curse is broken.

But if you doubt it's hate, I challenge you to put on an A-Rod jersey and take a stroll through Kenmore Square on a game night.  Or past the front office of any New York region MPVD when the YES Network contract is up for renewal.

Oh, and by the way, my wife's family are all Mets fans.

Whoa, whoa, whoa wait a minute!  The National League is *real* baseball, where people bat for themselves instead of letting washed-up 40somethings hang onto careers as DHs because they can't touch their toes any more.

Which league has the pitcher who's won the Cy Young award twice in a row? (wait, you say there's 2 cy young awards? DON'T CHANGE THE SUBJECT.)

Isn't it the AL that's home to the Kansas City Noncontenders? Is there any thrill in watching teams face off against Baltimore -- have they won a game at home yet?

As for Pirates-Astros, well, the Astros play in a new ballpark with... uh,.... an inexplicable mound in center field..... and an arbitrary "home run" line on a wall (because hitting it OVER THE WALL wasn't a clear enough concept for the architects, apparently), and ............ OK, I admit: I despise the Astros. That ballpark is a travesty, and the fact that it was named Enron for a while just makes it worse.

But the REST of the NL (except the Pirates) is clearly (well, maybe the Padres too) the superior (oh wait, i forgot the Reds).......

Aw, hell:  Go A's.

Duh,

Envy is not hate.  The Red Sox (note normally replace the o with a u but this is a nice friendly website) wish they have had the success of the Yankees.  Looking at the fact that this is a Nielson thing, I suspect that it is based around how fans around the league react to their team playing other teams.  Nobody cares if they are playing the Indians - maybe that apathy is viewed as hate.  People who want to watch quality baseball turn to the Yankees.  Imagine having your favorite team in Triple A (oh wait I mean the National League).  You can watch the Pirates - Astros or the Yankees - anyone.  Who in their right mind wants to watch minor league baseball.

The beaneaters came in second on the hate list.

I think they'd have gotten different results if they'd polled executives from Cablevision, TWC and Verizon.  Or anybody within a 50 mile radius of Boston.
