Wegleitner Retiring From Verizon

Longtime Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) executive Mark Wegleitner is retiring from the company, Verizon announced today.

Wegleitner, who has held various titles from CTO to senior vice president of technology, has often been the public face of Verizon's technology unit and a guiding force for many of its initiatives, including its early deployment of fiber-to-the-home known as FiOS and recent tests of 10-Gigabig XG-PON technology, as well as pilot deployments of 100-Gigabit ultra long-haul optical networks.

The Verizon exec also was a key leader for Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) , serving on its executive board and regularly appearing as a member of the annual CTO panel that was a highlight of the now-defunct Supercomm tradeshow.

Wegleitner was a media favorite because he was often willing and available to talk about tough issues, and rarely ducked a question.

re: Wegleitner Retiring From Verizon

I am truly saddened to learn that Mark is leaving Verizon at such a young age.  He had the vision and expertise to take on the US residential last mile challenge when Ed Whittaker of SBC backed off and chose acquistions over infrastructure improvement as recommended by his lab execs.  LR has bestowed many accolades upon Verizon for taking the risk to push fiber to the residence and I can only wish that I had access to FiOS TV in my region here in California.  His technology leadership and drive at Verizon has kept the USA from being considered by the international technology consortium as a second or third rate broadband access country.

Mark is a terrific spokesperson for our industry.  He made a major impression on me and I wish him the best and hope that he will continue to participate in our industry in some fashion.  Mark, my son in law is a founder of a private capital company and would love to have you as a partner.

Mark was definitely a leader in this industry in many ways. I think Verizon has, in general, been willing to take a leadership position on many technology issues. The company also has been willing to talk about what it is doing, which AT&T is often reluctant to do. I don't know if it's a corporate culture issue or what, but I always found Wegleitner not only available to talk but willing to address the tough issues.

Many will miss Mark.  He was a great technology leader who was committed to the growth of the technology and business. He (along with many execs with potential) relocated to the big new VZ headquarters in Basking Ridge a few years ago hoping to lead and make change, but unfortunately Ivan, Denny and Dick pushed the telco leaders to the side to make room for the wireless execs. They don't understand there is more than just RF signals between a tower and a device. Mark was tainted with the telco background and got stuck.  I don't blame him for retiring now. Good luck to him.
