Access to shared and unlicensed spectrum will extend 5G into a wider range of deployments and create opportunity for innovation. It will enhance mobile broadband deployments anchored in licensed spectrum by aggregating spectrum for extreme bandwidths (similar to Licensed-Assisted Access), but also expand to new types of deployments such as enhanced local broadband and Internet of Things verticals (similar to MulteFire). 5G New Radio (NR) is designed to natively support all spectrum types and, through forward compatibility, has the flexibility to take advantage of new spectrum sharing paradigms. We are pioneering spectrum sharing technologies such as LTE-U, LAA, LTE Wi-Fi Link Aggregation (LWA), Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), Licensed Shared Access LSA and MulteFire already today. Gabriel covers the mobile network system architecture, including evolution of the RAN, the mobile core, and service-layer platforms and applications. Key technologies in his coverage area include LTE Advanced, small cells, Evolved Packet Core, carrier Wi-Fi and software-centric networking technologies such as NFV, SDN and service chaining. Gabriel has covered mobile networking since 1998 through published research, live events, operator surveys and custom consulting.

Mingxi Fan, Vice President, Engineering, Qualcomm
Dr. Mingxi Fan joined the division in 2002 as a system engineer on cdma2000 EV-DO project. He has worked on driving key technology initiatives on cdma2000, UMTS and LTE from concept to commercialization. His responsibilities spanned system design, prototype, standardization, technology positioning and evangelization and commercial product development and verification. He also established Qualcomm Research China operation in 2008 as the first overseas research division for the company. He is presently leading the R&D initiative for taking LTE to unlicensed bands. Mingxi holds more than 20 US patents and has received top contributor awards in Qualcomm Research in 2004 and 2011.
