Jim leads Heavy Reading's research on the service assurance and security impact of the virtualized cloud on the control plane and application layers, both in the fixed and mobile core and at the enterprise edge. Jim focuses on the security impacts that cloud-based technologies such as 5G introduce from a cyber-threat detection perspective, as well as billing and service assurance transformation implications. Jim joined Heavy Reading from Nortel Networks, where he tracked the VoIP and application server market landscape and was a key contributor to the development of Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) standards. Additional technical experience was gained with Bell Canada, where he performed IN and SS7 network planning, numbering administration, technical model forecast creation and definition of regulatory-based interconnection models. Jim is based in Ottawa, Canada.

Patrick Lopez is global VP of product management for 5G products at NEC, where he supports the product strategy and planning, partnership, and growth of the Open RAN, 5G Core and 5G monetization services. He has over 20 years’ experience building, launching and operating telecoms businesses in startups, mid-sized and tier one multinationals. Prior to NEC, was global VP of networks innovation at Telefonica group and CEO at {Core Analysis}, the leading industry analyst practice at the intersection of telco and cloud. He was exclusive advisor to Opera software in its acquisition of Skyfire for $155 million.

While at Telefonica, Patrick sat on the Boards of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and 5Tonic (an open 5G laboratory). Patrick has collaborated to various industry and financial reports including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston, and has written several articles in collaboration with The Wall Street Journal, Wireless Week, Fierce wireless, RCR Wireless News, CNN and CNBC. Patrick currently resides in Toronto, Canada and has worked in the United States, Spain, Canada, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain and France. He holds a MBA in Corporate Management.

Nozomu Watanabe joined NEC Corporation in April 1988. His career started as an engineer of mobile radio access technology. From 1998 to 2003, he was Division Manager of Telecom MODUS Ltd. (UK), where he engaged to launch development center of mobile base station equipment for global market.

In 2011, he was assigned to General Manager of Mobile Radio Access Network Division, responsible for mobile base station equipment business for telecom carriers. In 2017, he was assigned to General Manager of Wireless Network Development Division, responsible for wireless network development. In 2018, he was promoted to Senior Vice President and he is currently responsible for 5G and next generation network solution technology development.

Atsuo Kawamura joined NEC Corporation in April 1986. His career started as a software engineer for the development of digital telephone switching system for global communication service providers. In 2012, he became General Manager of Carrier Services Division, responsible for overall network services and solutions for telecom carriers. In 2014, he became Senior Vice President and headed the SDN /NFV business which is the core technology for next generation carrier network. In 2017, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and head of Telecom Carrier Business Unit, supervising the provision of a wide range of end to end telecommunication products and solutions. In 2018, he was assigned to the head of Network Service Business Unit, responsible for network service business to various enterprise customers as well as telecom operators. In 2021, Global 5G business was assigned as his additional responsibility.
