VON Madness

2:15 PM -- SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Breakfast meeting at Il Fornaio downtown today, next door to the convention center and VON. But instead of the usual laptop presentations and BlackBerry clickers around us, we've got old people dressed in bright colors.

I'd forgotten that March Madness arrives in San Jose tonight, with HP Pavilion playing host to one-fourth of the NCAA Sweet 16 (men's regionals, if you want to get all technical).

So, the table across from us has a trio of Pitt fans. Just down the row from them are two elderly couples dressed in screaming Kansas blue. And during breakfast, a couple of alums from UCLA -- the team carrying my bracket's fate -- get seated nearby. No sign of Southern Illinois, whose fans are apparently too embarrassed about supporting a team called the Salukis.

No food fights or anything; these are all the genteel 50-and-up crowd who can afford a nice downtown hotel, not to mention actual Sweet 16 tickets. Now, if one of the teams' bands had shown up for breakfast -- that'd be a story.
