Voices in the Head

2:20 PM -- OK, here's a strange application for microwave transmissions that I've never heard of before. Using the signals to beam words into people's heads.

Yep, you read that right. Its called the "Frey Effect," close-range microwaves that can produce audible sounds in a person's ears. The U.S. Military has used the technology to project spoken numbers across a lab to volunteers and experimented with using it for crowd control, according to New Scientist.

So, take heart, the next time you get an Eagles song stuck in your head for days on end -- even though you loathe that band beyond all reason -- you may not be losing it, you may just be a victim of the Frey effect. Maybe.
