Virtual Politics

5:10 PM -- Politicians, living and dead, are snuggling in on virtual platforms.

Second Life brings back JFK... but not for long:

Virtual marketing firm Avatar Promotions has created a Second Life version of Dealey Plaza, the Dallas street where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The company plans to hold a re-enactment of the event on its anniversary next week: an invitation-only event to which 40 people will be invited. Lead consultant Jason Baird hopes the virtual version will become a magnet to conspiracy theorists...

Wow. That's not creepy at all. Poor JFK. Even in his virtual life he has to end up murdered.

And, according to the Daily Mail, politicians go 3D -- for the first time ever:

Some people believe that politics is just a game - and now it is ... a computer game.

Following in the footsteps of such virtual-reality heroes as Lara Croft and the Super Mario Brothers come Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, David Cameron, Alistair Darling and Des Browne.

All five - accompanied, bizarrely, by two characters meant to resemble Keira Knightley and Paris Hilton - appear in SeriousPolicy, a new game intended to make politics more interesting to young people.

Because, as Paris would say: "Politics... That's hot."

re: Virtual Politics I can see how JFK geeks could have fun with this, but what do you bet at least one of them takes the SL simulation *way* too seriously?

For example -- LHO was actually outdoors at street level while the shots were being fired .... True? In SL, you can make it so.

That's the problem -- if you're building a virtual Dealey Plaza, you can "prove" ANY conspiracy theory.

LHO shot JFK -- TRUE!! Grassy Knoll guy did -- TRUE!! Gray aliens did, using a fired Civil War bullet, momentum preserved, time-transported into the right coordinates to hit JFK -- TRUE!! The Texas Book Depository has 12 additional stories that are invisible -- TRUE!! Giant green ladybugs inhabited Dallas in 1963 -- TRUE!! Paul McCartney was shot instead of JFK -- TRUE!!

No wonder it's invitation-only.

re: Virtual Politics (Yes, I realize Paul McCartney hadn't been to the United States as of 1963 ... or so they would have us believe...)
