Telecable Picks Nagra for TV Everywhere

Telecable intends to launch one of the first TV Everywhere services in Latin America, thanks to a new deal with Nagra.

Nagra, the digital TV unit of the Kudelski Group , announced that it will provide its MediaLive multiscreen video solution to Telecable, one of the largest cable operators in Mexico. Telecable, which has more than 1.4 million video subscribers, plans to offer the new TV Everywhere service throughout its footprint, which stretches across 10 states of the Mexican republic. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Specifically, Telecable will tap into Nagra's MediaLive "end-to-end multiscreen solution." That solution consists of several key components, including the MediaAccess conditional access and digital rights management (DRM) system, OpenTV HTML5 ConnectWare, and MediaLive Service Platform.

Nagra and Telecable officials said the new TVE service will allow cable subscribers to tap into a variety of advanced video services and functions over time, including video-on-demand, over-the-top, start-over, and catch-up DVR features. The new multiscreen service will also enable subscribers to watch video programming on a wide range of devices beyond their digital cable set-top boxes, including tablets, connected TVs, smartphones, and game consoles.

Telecable represents Nagra's first cable system win in Mexico. The Kudelski unit is also working with Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) to roll out OTT and TVE services in six countries in South America.

Nagra is not the only multiscreen video specialist expanding its Latin American presence this week. Clearleap announced Wednesday morning that it's opening an office in Miami to support its move into the rapidly growing Central and South American video market.

Clearleap -- which works with such major US service and content providers as Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC), Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ), Home Box Office Inc. (HBO) , and Scripps Networks -- said it sees great promise for multiscreen and OTT services in the Latin American arena. Tom McCarthy, an industry veteran who previously worked for Tandberg Television (now part of Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) and Omneon/Harmonic, will head Clearleap's expansion efforts as vice president of sales, LATAM.

The company's leap into Latin America comes on the heels of Clearleap's recent infusion of $20 million in fresh funding from private investors to fuel its further expansion. The Latin American move also follows Clearleap's expansion into Europe last summer and the signing of its first pay-TV customer in Africa, Multichoice, last month.
