A Nokia sale of mobile, especially to the US, would be nuts
Nokia's hiring of Intel's Justin Hotard to be its new CEO has set tongues wagging again about a mobile exit, but it would look counterintuitive and inadvisable.
UPC has 200,000 digital television subscribers and is testing video-on-demand services
November 9, 2009
WARSAW -- UPC Polska’s biggest growth area in Q3 2009 was its digital television with 193,000 customers. Currently the service has already attracted more than 200,000 subscribers. In December 2009, the platform will be enhanced with the UPC ON DEMAND service. At the end of Q3 2009 the operator had 437,800 broadband internet subscribers and 168,500 telephony customers.
In the recent days UPC has reached the milestone of 200,000 DTV subscribers. The rapid growth of UPC Digital Television subscriber numbers has been possible thanks to the company’s consistent investments, which enable it to continuously expand its product offer. UPC was the first operator in the Polish market, which introduced innovative functionality of recording two programmes at once while watching a third. It also enabled its subscribers an automatic series recording (another first in the market), as well as a Multiroom service. In addition, UPC Polska’s offer stands out on account of the fact that all its digital television customers can also benefit – as part of their digital TV subscription – access to analogue television on all the TV sets in their home. Another significant development was the introduction of a new Mediabox, which can store 140 hours of programming in standard definition.
UPC Polska is also making ever-new improvements to its content offer, which now spans over 100 TV channels (including 8 in high definition quality) available within subscription tiers. Since the market launch of the service the programming offer was expanded by 16 new additions.
Coming soon: UPC ON DEMAND
Final operating tests of UPC ON DEMAND are now underway, and the service will become commercially available in December. UPC’s video-on-demand will offer wide selection of films available instantaneously, by simply using the remote control. Apart from movie titles, the video-on-demand catalogue will also include selected television shows and popular series from broadcasters, whose channels are offered by UPC.
Ever-faster internet
UPC Polska’s internet customers numbered 437,800 as at the end of Q3 2009. UPC is investing in network development to offer internet services with the best speed-to-price ratio and to set new market standards. In September 2009, UPC Polska rolled out a next-generation ultrafast broadband service UPC Fiber Power, available in four options - 8 Mb/s, 25 Mb/s, 50 Mb/s and 120 Mb/s.
