BEIJING -- TANDBERG Television, part of the Ericsson Group, today announced that its OpenStream® Digital Services Platform is being deployed by its business partner Star Communication Network Technology Co. Ltd for three regional cable operators in China. The TANDBERG systems will enable the introduction of on-demand television services in Shandong province, Gansu province and Yangquan city by the summer of 2008.
The deployments extend TANDBERG Television's presence in China and its partnership with Star Communications who will carry out all systems integration and operational deployment of the systems. Star Communication has been providing integration support for TANDBERG Television's OpenStream back office for two years and in 2007 deployed its first VOD system in the city of Datong. The industry's leading open standards based solution, OpenStream seamlessly integrates with third party products and offers operators the flexibility of using servers, applications, billing systems, and other system components from suppliers of their choice.
'We are proud of our partnership with TANDBERG Television as it enables us to provide our customers with world-class technology solutions for the advancement of digital TV in China. The TANDBERG OpenStream system is a market proven platform that is both flexible and scalable, allowing our customers to launch on-demand systems today that are able to grow as their services develop,' says Mr. Pang Xinxing, Chairman of Star Communication.
These new deals extend TANDBERG Television's leadership position in the on-demand market and in China. With more than five systems being deployed in China today and another five in Europe, including UPC Netherlands and Multimedia Polska; TANDBERG Television has rapidly become the international market leader in on-demand back office solutions. This builds on the company's already strong position in North America, where OpenStream has been the leading open digital services platform for a number of years.
'The market for on-demand video services is set to grow in China as cable operators seek ways to offer a more personalized television experience to their customers. By working with integration experts Star Communications we are able to provide our industry leading OpenStream VOD system backed by local expertise and knowledge,' says Geng Liang, General Manager of TANDBERG Television China. 'In a nascent market it is important to provide a cost-effective method of rolling out revenue generating on-demand services. OpenStream allows flexibility, scalability and the lowest possible total cost of ownership without sacrificing performance, security or freedom of choice.'
