OSLO, Norway, and COLOGNE, Germany -- Appear TV, a global provider of next-generation head-ends for broadcast and IP television, will be discussing how cable operators can maximize the benefits of IP transport by creating all-IP headends that enable multiple voice, data and video services to be transported over high speed fibre networks. Appear TV’s modular IP head-end technology enables operators to implement a staged migration – adding functionality as it is needed, rather than undertaking a wholesale head-end upgrade in a single programme.

An increasing number of cable operators are investigating a migration to an all-IP head-end as they look for ways to simplify the traditional technical head-end solution and reduce investment and operational cost. Traditionally, operators have been locked into a single vendor solution because of the management server needed to control the equipment and redundancy switching. The problem with this is that no single manufacture has the best products for all the different processing required in a digital cable head-end. A move to all-IP based head-end together with Appear TV unique output redundancy solution enables the move from the traditional single vendor “lock-in” to an open vendor solution where the operator can select the best product from each vendor.

Thomas Lind, Technical Director at Appear TV explains, “All-IP head-ends are the future for the cable industry, as consumers demand an increasing range of services. All-IP enables operators to scale quickly to deliver new services and channels from the same head-end to different network technologies such as cable, FTTH, ADSL, wireless.

“Traditional cable head-end’s have been based on a single-vendor environments. A move to an all-IP head-end offers cable operators more choice and flexibility, and enables them to build the infrastructure they need, when they need it, rather than having to undertake large-scale technology implementations every time they want to add a new channel.”
