Like SBC Communications, Verizon Communications is turning to Microsoft Corp. for help with its planned video offering over fiber-rich lines. Verizon and Microsoft announced Friday that the regional Bell will use the Microsoft TV software platform to deliver video services to subscribers, including video-on-demand (VOD), high-definition TV (HDTV) and digital video recording (DVR). Microsoft will also develop a customized interactive programming guide for Verizon's FiOS TV customers.
Microsoft said that it has already started working on integration with Verizon and its set-top box manufacturer, Motorola Inc. Verizon plans to launch the FiOS TV service later this year. With the deal, Microsoft has now signed up three of the four regional Bells--SBC, Verizon and, on a trial basis, BellSouth Corp.--as customers for its IPTV product.
