MILPITAS, Calif. -- Velio Communications, Inc. today announced the industry’s only multi-rate crosspoint switch with on-board CDRs, a single IC that supports 3.2 Gbps data rates over each of its 140 serial input and 140 output lanes for an aggregate bandwidth of nearly one terabit. The device integrates the functionality of 140 SerDes (serializers/deserializers), maximizing the signal integrity features and eliminating the costly board-level design requirements of external clock and data recovery. The single IC consumes 20 Watts under full load conditions at 3.2 Gbps.Called the VC3003, this device is a multi-rate 3.2 Gbps 140x140 crosspoint switch intended for use in carrier-class systems designed to switch massive amounts of traffic over optical wavelengths. New generations of carrier equipment need to support multi-terabits of traffic – however system backplane bottlenecks and signal integrity issues usually plague designers of high-speed switching equipment. The new equipment also needs to address the severe power constraints and real-estate restrictions that are imposed by the central office and co-location facilities.
