Unstrung – Unleashed

Here at Unstrung, where we are tied to nothing but the future (and, of course, the furniture some Saturday evenings), our aim is to give you a wide-ranging, thought-provoking, and irreverent take on the wonderful world of wireless.

As some of you will know, this has been Unstrung's mission since its inception in March 2000. But things are going to get a lot more wide-ranging, thought-provoking, and irreverent, now that the New Unstrung has emerged, butterfly-like, from its chrysalis.

Yes, the New Unstrung is a beautiful thing. It's now global in reach rather than US-centric. It's also dedicated to being first with the news, and first with analysis of the news. And there's also lot of other stuff to inform and entertain you.

We'll take you on a little tour to show you what we mean in a moment. But before we do that, here's some background to put things into context:

Today's relaunch of Unstrung stems from the Website's acquisition by Light Reading Inc. last February (see Light Reading Gets Unstrung). Light Reading has achieved phenomenal success in the optical networking market by delivering high-quality editorial for free. It has close to one million readers. It's now aiming to repeat this success in the wireless market.

We, the authors of this column, are:
  • Dan Jones, Senior Editor, Unstrung, based in New York, and formerly with Computer Wire
  • Ray Le Maistre, European Editor, Unstrung, based in London, and formerly editor of Total Telecom

Now let's take that tour of the New Unstrung Website to help you get familiar with your new surroundings:

News Analysis

Analysis of the news before other folk report the news – done in an easy-to-read, aggressive, and entertaining manner. Some examples:

Unstrung 25

Our very own stock price index, based on our pick of the top 25 public companies in the wireless market. See: Unstrung Index.

A further Unstrung 25 – our pick of the top 25 startups – will be published in the coming weeks.

Message Boards with "Wonk Talk"

Formatted like the ones that have been so successful on Light Reading, plus "Wonk Talk" at the foot of Unstrung's home page – a cartoon in which the latest couple of messages appear.

Unstrung Q&A

Martin Cooper, credited with inventing the mobile phone and the chairman and CEO of ArrayComm Inc., is the first industry luminary to step into the Unstrung spotlight. See: Martin Cooper - The Spectrum Avenger.
