OSLO -- Uninor today announced the launch of its global GSM service in Orissa, taking its footprint to 8 telecom circles: Orissa, Uttar Pradesh West, Uttar Pradesh East, Bihar (including Jharkhand), Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

"I am delighted with the pace Uninor has set in India. Today’s launch marks the entry into an important market, one that adds substantially to an already significant Indian footprint. The Telenor Group stands firmly committed to support this operation as it grows to become a preferred mobile operator in India," said Sigve Brekke, Executive Vice President of Telenor Group and Head of the Telenor Asia operations.

"With Orissa the Uninor footprint now sweeps seamlessly through North, East and Southern India covering India’s largest states. This also marks the completion of the first phase of our launch activities," said Stein-Erik Vellan, Managing Director of Uninor. "While our launch project now shifts to the second phase, the main focus now is on gaining shares where we have launched."

With the launch in Orissa, and further strengthening of its distribution in other states, the Uninor service is now available across 225,000 points of sale nationwide with over 60 exclusive Uninor shops ready for service. In Orissa itself, Uninor has achieved a launch day presence at over 13,762 points of sale ready for customers.

Uninor launched its service in India with two price plans – a base plan called talklonger@29p and a subscription plan called callmore@29p. Talklonger@29p is designed for customers who make longer calls, while Callmore@29p is designed for customers who call often.
