Top 10 Sci-Fi Films

3:40 PM -- The Guardian's "expert panel" has compiled their list of the 10 greatest science fiction films of all time.

An unsurprising roster. "Blade Runner" edged out "2001" for the top spot. But there's a glaring omission: "Plan 9 From Outer Space" got no mention.

So much for "experts" and their stupid stupid minds!

re: Top 10 Sci-Fi Films 5th element - very very good, but probably not top-ten for now until we see in a few more years how it withstands time.

Barbarella? Not. (although good scene with Jane at the beginning... and the only reason people went to see it)

Soylent Green is barely Sci Fi - not much Sci I can recall.

12 Monkeys was ok, but really not on par for top ten.

Why not Battle Beyond the Stars? (kidding)

PotApes must make the list. It had impact and staying power.

I liked Aliens better than Alien, but the original combined the horror/suspense with sci-fi without kick-a$$ weapons and marines.

I know SW-Empire is a better overall movie than A New Hope, but the original was far more impressive in its day as a sci-fi movie, and frankly created an entire new genre which should put it in the top ten alone. and it's up there with 2001 as the firsts to really understand how the music score can make a sci-fi movie more powerful (than you can possibly imagine? :)

re: Top 10 Sci-Fi Films As long as we're wondering how all of C. Heston's work was overlooked, don't forget "The Omega Man"

I detest Bruce Willis but "The Fifth Element" makes my top 10 list.

re: Top 10 Sci-Fi Films "Enemy Mine" was a surprisingly good story for the SF genre if you take out the hokey special effects.

Blade Runner was pretty flaky. Had nothing to do with the book. As a big Philip K. Dick fan and an Orange County native, I am hoping they do a little better with "A Scanner Darkly" which I think comes out this summer (starring Keanu Reeves, I think, an inauspicious start).

re: Top 10 Sci-Fi Films To be more constructive...
I'd put some Terry Gilliam on my list. Maybe "12 Monkeys." Definitely "Brazil."

re: Top 10 Sci-Fi Films
ah, yes, "Soylent Green", a must.

Demerits for skipping over "Forbidden Planet" (1956). Far superior to "The day the earth stood still"

I'd like to lasso Yul Brenner back in with "Westworld".

...and I can't believe "Planet of the Apes" wasn't up there.

Chuck Heston had a great run, eh?
