TMN, No More?

For anyone on the information systems side of a service provider, this article may be heresy! The opinions and postulates may rub folk the wrong way, but today’s economic hard times – where everyone in the service provider space must do much more with much less – are ripe for heretical ideas…

Since 1996, the TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) model has become the paradigm for the implementation and integration of front- and back-office systems for service providers. The TMN tackled issues like functionality and integration across a wide spectrum of predicaments that service providers face in order to deliver service.

Today’s service provider faces new challenges. Up until last year, service providers were in a build mode. They could use the TMN as a guide to build new services and determine whether to throw people or technology at a problem. This build-mode meant that service providers did not have time to question the relevance of the TMN to their business. It was virtually taken as Gospel.

Now, however, with most service providers re-trenching and going back to the basics of delivering quality service (while keeping existing customers), the TMN is choking many carriers...
