Time Warner Cable Races Ahead

While AT&T and Verizon are capturing headlines for their video rollout plans, cable MSOs are busy capturing telco customers. America's top MSO Comcast delivered red-hot first quarter subscriber results ( see Comcast Posts Big Subscriber Gains in Q1). Not to be outdone, number-two cable operator Time Warner posted record customer gains. Time Warner Cable added 346,000 residential high-speed data customers in Q1, its highest quarterly total ever, to bring its total to 5.2 million. Ringing up more success, Time Warner delivered its best-ever quarter for IP phone customer additions too, installing 270,000 in the quarter for a total of 1.4 million as of March 31, equal to 8% penetration. Time Warner also topped the 200K mark for business high-speed data customers, bringing its total to 216,000 at the end of Q1. Turning to video, Time Warner's basic cable subscriber count grew by 82,000 in Q1 to over 11 million, the MSO's biggest gain in six years. Digital video subscribers rose 241,000 to 5.6 million as digital penetration reached 51% of basic customers. Time Warner's Digital Video Recorder (DVR) subscribers climbed by 212,000 in Q1 to 1.7 million, representing 30% of digital video customers.
