The Dangers of Stealing WiFi

We've all been there: Sitting in our living room, searching for "available wireless networks," and for one reason or another (e.g., didn't pay the bill, router is crap, dog ate the tubes) our wireless network doesn't appear on the list. Out of the networks that do appear, a few are protected, often donning cute names like "The Smith Family," "Riley's Mac," "The Donner Party," etc. -- but there's always one or two that are wide open -- just begging you to come on in.

Taking that next step and connecting to a neighboring network is what's widely known as "WiFi piggybacking." In a poll last week, we asked Internet Evolution readers the following: "Do you 'borrow' or steal WiFi access from your friends and neighbors?" Nearly 350 readers weighed in.

To read and discuss the results of the poll, see the original story at Internet Evolution.
