Text Sells?

2:00 PM -- Mobile marketing research firm M:Metrics finds that three out of four European cellphone subscribers received an SMS text message advert in July 2007 and the trend is growing in the U.S.

"Certainly the level of interaction is impressive compared to almost any advertising vehicle available today" comments Evan Neufeld, senior analyst at M:Metrics in the blurb about the firm's findings. "It is undeniable that text-based mobile advertising is both a highly prevalent and an extremely effective medium for engaging customers."

I'm not sure I believe this though. I receive about two of these ads a month on my phone now. I'm not sure, however, that they could really be described as advertising. They're irrelevant annoyances that try and hawk stuff that doesn't remotely interest me. I delete them instantly.

Isn't that really more like a form of mobile spam?
