As one recent survey shows, smartphone sales for 2014 are expected to reach 1.2 billion units -- up more than 23% from 2013. A different report shows that in 2013, global mobile data traffic grew by 81%.
With such unprecedented numbers, mobile is being touted as the technology that can't be stopped. But the reality is that mobile's growth will only continue as long as its end users are happy with the devices that they use to access it.
Today, that doesn't seem like much of a problem. Everyone has a smartphone, and every other person has a tablet. But as more devices become available, the reality is that users become much choosier about what devices they want and what type of experience they'll accept from those devices.

But what every mobile device has in common is the need to be tested. Smartphones create a challenging test field for vendors, in that they work on multiple operating systems from multiple vendors and with multiple types of wireless technologies. Additionally, smartphones are updated and released so frequently that test cycles must be accelerated or risk becoming obsolete.
All these factors create unique challenges for smartphone vendors that are trying to balance being first to market with new products, while also ensuring the quality of experience (QoE) and quality of service (QoS) they need to attract and maintain customers over the lifetime of products in the wireless universe.
Also important is the issue of mobile test automation, which not only enables vendors to run tests more quickly and cheaply, but improves testing coverage and reliability. Smartphone test vendors are given the job of educating their users about how to best utilize automation tools, but doing so will create more unity and, ultimately, bring about even better customer satisfaction to the smartphone market.
