Terayon Communication Systems Inc. introduced a software enhancement for its CMTS product line called the Terayon FLEXable Plant Solution. The software has two elements -- TDMAccelerator and dB boost -- which work to increase DOCSIS network upstream capacity and reliability. In a nutshell, TDMAccelerator works to eliminate the 'least-common-denominator effect' on DOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 networks. Typically, the worst performing cable modems on a network may force a CMTS to limit the performance of other modems on that upstream channel to that level. TDMAccelerator assigns sub-performing modems to a pool, allowing more capable modems to run at higher order modulation, such as 16 QAM. dB boost increases the dynamic range of a cable modem's transmit power, allowing the device to overcome high path loss or noise conditions in a plant. However, dB boost only works with DOCSIS 2.0 modems that support S-CDMA. In other news Terayon announced the resignation of Shlomo Rakib as president and chief technical officer last week, though he will continue to serve as a board member. The move follows the recent resignation of Zaki Rakib as CEO, who now serves as the company's chairman. The Rakib brothers confounded Terayon in 1993.
