LONDON -- Telenor, Norway's largest telecommunications group, has chosenthe next-generation synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) platform fromTellabs to introduce layer 2 Ethernet services by integrating and managingTDM, SDH and Ethernet services on a single platform. By adding theTellabs® 6310 edge node, the Tellabs® 6320 edge node, the Tellabs® 6340switch node, the Tellabs® 6345 switch node and the Tellabs® 6350 switchnode into its network Telenor will become the first incumbent networkoperator to build a network offering multipoint virtual Layer 2 Ethernetservices using multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and Ethernet over SDH(EoSDH) technology.

The carrier class Tellabs® 6300 managed transport series enables networkoperators to leverage their existing SDH investments and open up newrevenue streams by integrating optical Ethernet services into theirinstalled base of SDH transport equipment.

"We chose Tellabs' solution because it is highly flexible and provides afast and cost-effective way to migrate our existing SDH network into atruly converged network. Tellabs' solution enables us to manage and deployEthernet services over the same infrastructure from a common managementplatform, " said Ole Henrik Waldenstrøm, director of Telenor NetworkSolutions.

"Tellabs is committed to enabling our customers to leverage their existingSDH networks and maximise their return on investment. According to severalleading industry analysts we are leading the way in providing thesenext-generation SDH solutions. Network operators need to introduce newhigh-speed voice and data services to their customers today and oursolutions enable them to do this cost-effectively and efficiently," saidAnders Gustafsson, president of Tellabs International.

Telenor has chosen to deploy a range of products from Tellabs'next-generation SDH portfolio:

  • The Tellabs 6310 and 6320 edge nodes, are small and easy to use add/drop multiplexers with multiple applications for access and customer premises. These applications include 2 Mbit/s per second, 34/45 Mbit/s, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet services.

  • The Tellabs 6340 switch node is one of the highest density products on the market today. It has a very small footprint, minimising operating costs from floor space to power consumption. Its main strength is in regional and metropolitan networks, where it can be used as a cross-connect for grooming and consolidation of voice and high-speed data traffic.

  • The Tellabs 6345 switch node is a scalable high density Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) designed for both metropolitan and regional networks. It reduces the bandwidth and switching capacity needed in the core of the network, creating a truly converged voice and data network and lowering costs substantially.

  • The scalable and high-density Tellabs 6350 switch node is a digital cross-connect with market-leading density that handles voice, leased line and value-added data services. It enables network operators to generate new revenue streams and reduce operating costs.

The Tellabs 6300 managed transport series combines a group of MSPPs, whichleverage an existing infrastructure to transport and deliver voice,high-speed data and video-on-demand services. Tellabs' solution is theonly one in the market today that combines Generic Framing Procedure (GFP),a standardised method of mapping Ethernet signals into SDH, Link CapacityAdjustment Scheme (LCAS), enabling network operators to change capacity ofEthernet links across the SDH network without traffic interruption, andMPLS-based Layer 2 switching functionality offering true Quality ofService.

All of the Tellabs 6300 managed transport system elements are monitored andmanaged end-to-end from a single network management platform.
