T-Mobile's iPhone Advantage

7:50 AM -- The iPhone is still giving Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) a boost in Germany, thanks to its ongoing exclusive supplier deal with Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL).

As the operator reported first-quarter results today, CEO René Obermann did not divulge when the exclusive contract with Apple will end, but he is clearly enjoying it while it lasts.

"The iPhone has so far been a very good, lucrative business for us and strategically important," said Obermann at the earnings results press conference on Wednesday morning. "It's fair to say we've left Vodafone behind in the last couple of years." (See Vodafone's iPhone Envy.)

The operator said revenue growth, particularly in mobile data services, at T-Mobile Deutschland GmbH was a highlight in its quarterly results. Mobile communication revenue in Germany was up 2.5 percent to €2 billion (US$2.5 billion) compared with €1.9 billion ($2.4 billion) in the same period last year. Mobile data revenues were up 39 percent year-on-year.

Overall, Deutsche Telekom's first-quarter revenues were down 0.6 percent to €15.8 billion ($20 billion), compared with €15.9 billion ($20.1 billion) in the same quarter last year.
