T-Commerce Back on the Radar

1:45 PM -- Once touted as a potential revenue gold mine, t-commerce has largely fizzled. The idea of instantly buying a gadget featured on your favorite TV show from your remote control is a wonderful conceptual idea. Making it reality has proven far more difficult. But some baby steps are taking shape.

Both Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) have announced they are launching the HSN shopping widget, an EBIF-powered app that lets customers purchase products using their TV remote. With the Comcast and FiOS additions, HSN Shop by Remote is now in 20 million homes. Dish Network LLC (Nasdaq: DISH) and some Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) properties also offer the app. Some Tier 2 MSOs are also getting in on the t-commerce action . It's enough to make you think this t-commerce thing may have some life ahead of it.
