Sycamore Ships Spur Modules

CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Sycamore Networks, a leader in intelligent optical networking, today announced new functionality for its SN 3000 Optical Access Switch and its SN 8000 Optical Transport System that is designed to allow service providers to cost-effectively bridge the transport and optically switched access networks.

Through the introduction of two new service modules--one on the SN 3000 and one on the SN 8000--Sycamore will enable service providers to lower their infrastructure costs, simplify network management, and allow service providers to extend optical services into towns and cities that are not served by the backbone or metro core networks.

With capital and operational budgets in mind, this unique, cost-effective solution is designed to allow service providers to drive down the cost of delivering bandwidth while increasing their service capabilities from the core to the edge of the public network.

Sycamore's integrated solution simplifies service provider networks by eliminating redundant platforms traditionally collocated at the spur hub site. The solution enables a direct connection between the transport devices at a spur hub site and access devices at a remote site. Eliminating the need for network equipment at each hub site, as required in traditional network builds, can result in up to a 50 percent savings in capital expenditure per site.
