Sycamore: Good News in the Offing?

Rumor du jour:

Sycamore Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMR) is working on a big deal with Japan’s NTT Corp. that could come to fruition in the next few weeks.

This information comes from a previously reliable source, although at press time it wasn't clear whether the source is a Sycamore shareholder or not. Sycamore itself declines to comment.

If the rumor proves to be true, it would give Sycamore a much needed boost. Some of its other contracts, notably with Williams Communications Group (NYSE: WCG) and 360networks Inc. (Nasdaq: TSIX; Toronto: TSX.TO), appear to be going sour (see Sycamore Drops a Bomb).

Industry observers are skeptical about the rumor, pointing out that Sycamore has had more success selling equipment to startup carriers laying new fiber and not using Sonet/SDH, like Sweden's Utfors. NTT is likely to be at the opposite end of the scale, with massive amounts of older fiber and existing SDH infrastructure.

C'mon Peter, are you running a hi-tech version of the National Equirer? There should be enough real news out there for you guys to focus on that, not rumors, especially if you're not clear if the source is a stock holder...

LR did the same thing with Corvis a couple months ago, and they were praised for their "unbiased journalism", "journalistic integrity", etc.

I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. The only difference here is that people will crap all over LR simply because Sycamore advertises on LR's site. The Corvis article shows that LR is able to post gossip regardless of who it is about.

Peter,

Corvis posted 60% more revenue than SCMR expects to post this quarter.

Why don't you now write a real story about SCMR?

re: Sycamore: Good News in the Offing?
You know, NTT is competeing with a startup for a reign of Japan's FTTH market and they are losing ground with their own outdated - and costly - SDH networks. The retail monthly rate for a 100Mbps FTTH service? $48 (Y6,100, inclusive of Internet access and ONU, exclusive of installation).

Given NTT has the budget of $2-5B upgrading its fiber networks over the next few years, it's no wonder some of them go into the pocket of US vendors. Question is how much. $20-30M is nothing. And would they bet only on SCMR?

Have to see...
