Startup Company Profile #4: Camiant Inc.

Camiant Inc. is the leader in the PCMM policy server segment with announced deployments by top MSOs Cox Communications and StarHub (Singapore). Founded in 2003 by engineers from Broadband Access Systems (a CMTS start-up acquired by ADC), Marlborough, Mass.-based Camiant counts 60 employees. Investors include Matrix Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners and Pilot House Ventures.

Unannounced, but rumored customers include Comcast and Shaw Communications. The only cable IP infrastructure element Cisco lacks is a PCMM policy server. The technology is the lynchpin for implementing dynamic quality of service on both the DOCSIS IP and PacketCable communications networks. The PCMM policy server plays a particularly important role in PacketCable Release 2, which brings SIP and IMS into the cable environment. Strategically, Cisco will not want to rely on a third-party supplier for this key functionality. Time for them to snap-up Camiant and end the suspense.
