Sprint to Offer Unlimited Data for iPhone

Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) is going to be the first U.S. carrier to offer the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone with an unlimited data plan, starting at US$79.99 a month.

The CDMA carrier will start offering the iPhone 4S and 4 for the first time on its network on Oct. 14. The carrier will sell the phones -- on a two-year contract -- with a few different unlimited options. They start at $69.99 for unlimited data plus 450 "Anytime" talk minutes, $89.99 for 900 minutes and $99.99 for Sprint's "Simply Everything" plan.

All of the data plans come with Sprint's $10 extra "premium data" monthly charge. Sprint added the premium for WiMax users in 2010 and extended it to 3G data in January 2011. (See Sprint Raises 3G Prices to 4G Levels.)

Why this matters
Unlimited data is the one unique selling point for the iPhone 4S and $99 iPhone 4 that Sprint has over AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and Verizon Wireless , both of which offer capped plans with the Apple phone. Sprint has been touting its unlimited data difference over its rivals with ads on U.S. TV for months now.
