Sprint Nextel's iDEN Sale Faces Hurdles

Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) is reported to be awaiting a new round of bids for its Nextel iDEN unit, even as the company was hit by another report criticizing its customer service.

Nextel's former international operation, now separate and called NII Holdings, is considered a logical acquirer because NII uses Nextel's iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) network, The Wall Street Journal reported. In addition, several private equity firms have been reported to be looking at acquiring the Nextel operation.

There are several hurdles to any acquisition of Nextel, not the least of which is the unit's poor rankings in customer service polls. Earlier this week, the J.D. Power & Associates poll on customer service satisfaction by cell phone service providers placed Sprint Nextel in the bottom rank of major U.S. cell phone providers.
