U.S. Cellular's CIO/CTO Combo

11:15 AM -- The process of introducing its new customer service program, the Belief Project, and revamping its Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) systems has been made easier for U.S. Cellular Corp. (NYSE: USM) by the integration of the US mobile operator's IT and networking operations. (See U.S. Cellular Believes in SPIT.)

That IT/networking integration is a trend that's starting to take hold at a lot of wireless operators. Michael Irizarry, executive vice president and chief technology officer, was hired to be engineering CTO in 2002, but he's performed both the CTO and CIO job functions for the past four years as the organization has gone all IP. (See BT's New BIG SPITTER.)

Irizarry says making the case for such integration is made easier by the fact that security on the network and Information Systems (IS) is becoming less demarcated, and charging functions are now housed on both architectures.
