Cisco to Acquire ThreatGrid Security

Mitch Wagner

SAN FRANCISCO - CiscoLive -- Cisco is beefing up its security portfolio. It plans to acquire ThreatGrid, which provides dynamic malware analysis and threat intelligence technology.

Hilton Romanski, Cisco business development head, wrote in a company blog post this morning:

Today, I am pleased to announce Cisco's intent to acquire ThreatGRID, headquartered in New York, NY. ThreatGRID offers dynamic malware analysis and threat intelligence technology, both on-premise and in thecloud. This helps organizations and security teams defend proactively against and quickly respond to advanced cyber attacks and malware outbreaks.

ThreadGrid technology would enhance Cisco's Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), originally developed by Sourcefire, which the company acquired last year. Romanski wrote that ThreatGrid's on-premises product will help Cisco customers with in-house data retention requirements. (See Cisco Banks on Sourcefire & Snort for Security.)

AMP provides malware detection and blocking, as well as "continuous analysis and retrospective remdiation of advanced threats," he wrote.

Cisco expects to close the acquisition in the fourth quarter. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Agreed. If you have the reach & funds and/or advisory shares, why try to recreate the wheel.

pcharles09 - Makes sense. If you want to find a leader who knows how to run a successful startup, look for someone who's already done so.

Re: Under the radar
I've started to notice the connections with many of the upstarts nowadays. It seems like the 'successful' ones are either run by serial entrepreneurs or advised by them.

pcharles09 - Good catch. The leadership team has connections to the top companies in the Fortune 500 and tech and security industries.

Re: Under the radar
You can get a pretty good idea of their strategy if you check the Board of Directors' backgrounds. They probably have a good amount of connections in the industry to allow them to have plenty of beta customers, in the least.

Under the radar
Pretty much zilch info about ThreatGrid on its web site--no mention of a customer(s) that I could find on their web site. But interesting the vendor received funding from In-Q-Tel, which is CIA's investment project.
