3:05 PM -- OSS firm InfoVista SA has acquired its way into the deep packet inspection (DPI) market with the acquisition for €13.5 million ($19.5 million) of fellow French software outfit Accellent SAS, which boasts DPI capabilities as part of its application usage and traffic flow monitoring system. (See InfoVista to Buy Accellent.)

DPI is an increasingly hot topic as it's regarded as a technique carriers could use to identify, and then charge for, particular traffic streams that run across their networks, as well as protect and make better use of their infrastructure. (See IP Traffic Smarts Hit Berlin, Allot Shows Off, Double Down on DPI?, and Deep Packet Inspection .)

Network performance management specialist InfoVista also announced its first quarter results today. (See Infovista Reports Q1.)
