PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- As Occam Networks' BLC 6000(TM) Broadband Loop Carrier customer base grew in 2005, the company decided to upgrade its OccamView(TM) Element Management System, originally developed in 2000 To assist with this upgrade, Occam engaged Velankani Communications Technologies, an innovator in engineering services.

"OccamView Version 5 provides outstanding support for incumbent local exchange carriers (ILEC's) eager to offer new voice, data and video services to their customers," said Dave Mason, VP of Engineering, Occam Networks. "We needed a company with substantial experience who could architect and develop an effective, scalable solution. With Velankani, we received the best of two worlds: engineering support in the U.S., and high-quality, cost-effective software development in Bangalore."

Velankani designed the new OccamView EMS, Version 5.0 to add the flexibility, scalability and performance monitoring required by ILECs for the voice, data and video "triple play" they are deploying today over Occam Networks' BLC 6000. OccamView 5.0 is capable of managing the complete range of BLC 6000 products.

OccamView 5.0 can automatically discover the nodes in a network and provide a graphical representation of the network's topology as well as the status of all devices and links in the network. As new BLC 6000 elements are added to the network, OccamView 5.0 discovers them automatically, so IT teams can expand the network without manual configuration. OccamView 5.0 features highly flexible fault and event management capabilities, with user definable behavior definitions and selectable views of faults and events, including detailed correlations and forwarding of alarm states. It monitors the performance of the network's Ethernet and DSL interfaces, and provides graphical displays of network performance and trends.

Velankani completed and delivered OccamView 5.0 in just seven months. Velankani engineers built OccamView 5.0 on AdventNet's WebNMS(R) network management framework. Neil Butani, AdventNet's Vice President of Business Development commented, "We developed the WebNMS as a solid foundation and framework for building, testing and launching a custom EMS in a short timeframe. This is an absolute necessity for a company like Occam, which is evolving rapidly. The WebNMS allows an experienced developer like Velankani to build a world class EMS in a fraction of the time it would otherwise require."

Velankani's staff worked closely with Occam's engineers throughout the project. "We tested the OccamView EMS 5.0 with BLC 6000s located in our Bangalore lab and Occam Networks' Santa Barbara facility. We developed a simulator to add another 1,000 managed devices to the test network and used a combination of real devices and simulators throughout the testing. As a result, we demonstrated that OccamView can discover and manage devices across very large logical networks, located anywhere in the world," said Javanthi Narasimhan, Velankani's Vice President of Software Development.
