IBM Makes Intelliden Buy

IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) is brushing up on its IP smarts, announcing today that it's acquired Intelliden Corp. for an undisclosed sum. (See IBM Acquires Intelliden.)

Intelliden's main trick is to provide autoconfiguration capabilities for networks, particularly IP networks. Automatic configuration can be a big help to network operators; IBM's press release claims 60 percent of all outages can be traced to manual configuration errors.

IBM will fold Intelliden into its Tivoli Software group.

IBM might have been attracted by Intelliden's uses in the enterprise, but the technology is applicable to telecom networks as well.

That could become a big deal to IBM, as software and IT issues are becoming paramount in the telecom world. As networks shift to IP and become a critical factor to businesses, service providers are putting new emphasis on behind-the-scenes factors such as OSS and Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) in general. Intelliden already has some telco cred, having teamed up with Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) in 2007, a combination that won deployment with Telus Corp. (NYSE: TU; Toronto: T); IBM also notes that Telecom Italia (TIM) is an Intelliden customer. The company has former AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) CTO Hossein Eslambolchi on its advisory board, as well. Intelliden made OSS headlines in 2007 by being one of the few companies in the sector to get funding. For the past few years, it's been more common for OSS companies to get acquired. (See Intelliden Gets $10M and OSS Firm Raises $14M.)
