DT Lickin' FMC Wounds

1:00 PM -- After being burned by its failed T-One dual-mode WiFi/GSM fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) service last year, Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) has no appetite for dual-mode services in its home market. (See Deutsche Telekom Cancels FMC Service and Unstrung's Top Five Wireless Turkeys.)

Speaking at the IP Telco World conference in London today, Dr. Felix Wunderer, senior vice president of a newly created FMC division at Deutsche Telekom, said the operator had no plans to launch another dual-mode service in Germany. But the operator likely has other FMC ideas, based on a recently announced deal for packet switched core network infrastructure elements from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. . "We don't see the market demand for having these WiFi/GSM integrated [offers] in Germany," he said.

The German giant's U.S. subsidiary, T-Mobile US Inc. , offers a UMA-based dual-mode WiFi/GSM service, called Hotspot @Home, but the market needs are different in America, explained Wunderer. "There are different reasons [for the service], mainly because of in-house coverage," he said. (See T-Mobile Launches UMA in USA and T-Mob Ships UMA BlackBerry.)
