Disruptive Telcos?

5:55 AM -- LONDON -- Service Provider IT Global Event Series -- Roberto Minerva from Telecom Italia (TIM) was one of the early speakers here in London, and gave a fascinating presentation about the options faced by telecom operators today.

In a nutshell, Telecom Italia's strategy is focused on building a state-of-the-art access network (fiber, wireless) and being a service-delivery platform provider, enabling the provision of multiple services from multiple sources.

But to do this, today's traditional operators need to think and act more like competitive service providers, and figure out how to make best use of the intelligence that's now being concentrated in the user devices at the very edge of the network.

"It's impossible to match Google in terms of data center capacity… telcos have to think of ways to be disruptive," and that includes devising ways of utilizing peer-to-peer connectivity between devices, stated Minerva, who is manager of Telecom Italia's Long Term Research, Future Center & Technical Communication unit.
