The Cloud, Defined

2:30 PM -- The day we've all been waiting for has arrived. A working definition of cloud computing is now available, courtesy of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) .

We begin by reading:

"This cloud model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics, three delivery models, and four deployment models."

Wait. Twelve parts?

Screw that. I'll stop reading here.

To be fair, NIST's syntax is less stilted and vapid than most corporate mission statements. And they did manage to keep it down to two pages. But -- sheesh. I'll stick to my pre-June 2009 understanding of the "cloud" as hosted, flexible resources connected via the network.
