NEC Eyes Clouds in Europe

2:00 PM -- NEC Corp. (Tokyo: 6701) has rounded up its European businesses to align them with its global cloud-computing strategy. (See NEC Heads for the Clouds.)

Part of the revamp involves NEC's European subsidiary, NEC Europe Ltd., taking over full ownership of NEC Philips Unified Solutions , which specializes in IP telephony systems, session initiation protocol (SIP) servers, and unified communications applications for businesses. Previously, NEC Europe owned a majority stake in this business, while Royal Philips Electronics N.V. (NYSE: PHG; Amsterdam: PHI) owned the remainder. Now, NEC will change the name of the business to NEC Unified Solutions.

In another change, NEC Europe has also consolidated its IT platforms business from NEC Computers SAS. The IT platform business comprises servers, storage, virtualization, and integrated services.

NEC is big on cloud services and Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT). For example, the company showcased carrier-grade cloud services at the Mobile World Congress in February in Barcelona. (See MWC 2010 Photos: NEC Booth Tour, NEC Heads to MWC, and SPIT Watch: CA, NEC Bulk Up.)
