Light Appropriate to "Light" Reading, a few years after inventing the telephone, he invented the 'photophone', a phone that used optical transmission of sound. It took the invention of using optical fibers for transmission almost 100 years later for this idea to catch on.

Bell curve A few other AGB trivia points: 1. Although he was Scottish by birth, he abhored haggis. 2. He was called Aleck by his family, including his mother, the now-famous Ma Bell, who used to admonish her child by saying, "Don't be smart, Aleck."  3. He lived in Canada, but never played ice hockey and didn't like donuts.
