SMS’s Sore Thumb Serenade

12:35 PM -- SMS certainly isn't the sexiest mobile technology (unless we're talking sexting), but it is the fastest growing. Both Syniverse Technologies LLC and Sybase Inc. put out PR today touting the huge growth of SMS on wireless operator networks.

Sybase has moved 1 trillion inter-carrier text messages since 2001, while Syniverse reports moving 1.6 billion every day in the second quarter of 2010, 23 percent more than the same quarter last year. (See Syniverse Sees Messaging Spike and Syniverse Touts Mobile Messaging Growth.)

Sybase noted that its 1 trillion texts in the past nine years is equivalent to processing about 32,000 messages per second for every second of one year. It moves around 1.5 billion messages per day and expects the next trillion to be complete by 2012.

Omg dats a lotta txt msgs! Lol ;)
