Smiley Face Turns 25

4:30 PM -- Some news out of my alma mater: Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott Fahlman claims that 25 years ago, he was the first person to type the horizontal smiley face -- :-) -- in a computer message.

Fahlman posted the emoticon in a message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on September 19, 1982, during a discussion about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.

I never had Professor Fahlman during my four years at CMU, but it's comforting to know that innovation still runs thick through the veins of the university's faculty. I'll be sure to sign my next alumni donation check with a smiley face and dot my i with a heart.

Of course, since the check will likely amount to a grand total of four dollars, CMU's reaction will be :-(
