Apple is unveiling the Mac Mini M4 tomorrow, which includes the company's new AI technology – Apple Intelligence.
Fortunately for service providers managing increased demands on the network from the rise of AI, Apple Intelligence operates with a mix of on-device processing and cloud-based computing. In smartphones, for example, more on-device AI capabilities reduces the network traffic load, and operators have more control over privacy and security, Canalys Analyst Runar Bjorhovde recently told Light Reading.
The Mac Mini M4 uses Apple silicon to run multiple generative AI models directly on the device, explained Allegra Tepper, product manager for Apple Intelligence, during Apple's event unveiling the new Mac. But, it can also access cloud-based processing for larger GenAI applications.
"With Private Cloud Compute, it can also tap into larger, server-based models while protecting your privacy," she said.
According to Apple: "When using Private Cloud Compute, users' data is never stored or shared with Apple; it is used only to fulfill their request."
Apple Intelligence can summarize text into reference tables and improves Siri's ability to provide assistance and take actions, said Tepper.
In addition to AI features for writing assistance, such as proofreading and providing writing suggestions, Apple Intelligence can also be used for image editing.
M4 versus M4 Pro chip
There are two chip options for the Mac Mini – the M4 or the M4 Pro "which sports more processing cores and a better GPU, making it ideal for tasks like high-end video editing and gaming," according to Fast Company. The M4 Pro chip comes with either a 16-core or 20-core GPU. Storage ranges from 256GB to 8TB, and memory options range from 16GB to 64GB. The standard M4 Mac Mini model also includes a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, explained The Verge.

"M4 Pro features a massive 75% increase in memory bandwidth over M3 Pro. That's twice as much bandwidth as any PC chip and is especially impactful when running AI workloads," said Tim Millet, Apple's VP of platform architecture, during the launch event.
First carbon neutral Mac
Apple is also touting a number of sustainability features for the Mac Mini M4.
"The smaller enclosure is made with an impact extrusion process that reduces the amount of aluminum used by 85%," said Shloka Kini, product manager for the Mac Mini, during the launch event. "The new Mini also includes over 50% recycled content and it's manufactured with 100% renewable electricity."
Apple is also prioritizing non-air shipping, which makes the new Mac Mini M4 the first carbon neutral Mac, said Kini.
When it comes to ports, the Mac Mini includes Ethernet, HDMI and three Thunderbolt 4 (USB4) ports on the back plus two USB-C (USB 3) ports and a headphone jack on the front.
The Mac Mini also nearly fits in the palm of the hand at 5-by-5 inches and 2-inches tall. Prices for the M4 start at $599.
