Slideshow: Motorola's WiMax House

CHICAGO -- WiMax World 2008 -- Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) teamed up with Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) to showcase a "WiMax house" running on the nearly ready XOHM network in the Windy City. (See Chicago WiMax Is 'Imminent'.)

Motorola used an eco-friendly house that it sponsors at the James Crown Space Center to showcase a plethora of WiMax applications and more customer premises equipment than you can shake a stick at. From TV and mobile VOIP to remote working and wireless gaming, Moto and Sprint had it up and running. Check it out in our slideshow:

Motorola spokespeople said that they were getting up to 8 Mbit/s on the downlink for broadband applications. The capacity was, however, somewhat limited by the 8 Mbit/s backhaul link to the house.

The vendor was running a 400-series 802.16e radio on the roof of the house to provide connectivity. Inside the house, the vendor had many, many CPE units on show. A unit with internal WiFi and a WiMax link will be the next step for Motorola and is expected in the first quarter of 2009.
