SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Siros Technologies, Inc., a privately held company that is opening up new dimensions in optical technologies, today announced a successful demonstration of Siros' design for vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) technology with high power density. VCSELs, which are being extensively researched as a less costly alternative to edge emitting lasers in high-speed data communication, have yet to be configured for data storage because the required power densities could not be achieved. The Siros VCSEL team showed that when coupled with Siros' very-small-aperture laser (VSAL), a VCSEL could produce over 80 times the power density of previous small aperture VCSEL demonstrations. With the other advantages that VCSELs have over edge emitting lasers, including lower cost of manufacturing, packaging, alignment, and testing as well as lower power dissipation and higher reliability, the Siros VSAL+VCSEL design has the potential to truly expand the limits of data storage.

"This accomplishment has far-reaching implications for VCSEL technology," said Dr. Timothy Gallagher, Executive Vice President of Technology for Siros. "Previous technical approaches have achieved 0.06 mW/um(2) while the work of Robert and his team demonstrated an emission power density of 5 mW/um(2). The VSAL+VCSEL achievement is the first step toward a practical, high power density system."
