MWC Day 1 Diary: The Extreme Submarine & a Caffeine Hit

BARCELONA -- Mobile World Congress 2016 -- Despite a strike by the subway train drivers on day one of this year's MWC, the halls at Barcelona's Fira are even more rammed than ever (which is good news for the show's accountants -- see MWC's Millions: Hot-for-Profit in Barcelona).

And of course there are thousands of announcements hitting the newswires, with every company here desperate to grab the limelight and attract folks to their designated meeting place, whether that be a regular stand, an entire small town (in the case of both Huawei and Ericsson) or a coffee stall for those on a budget.

But what's sticking in my mind? Well, I haven't yet had a chance to do the full coffee rounds (or should that be coffee grounds?) and sample the output from the multiple baristas housed on various booths here but the cappuccino on offer at the Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) village is passable (it scores 6 out of 10). It was a welcome accompaniment to the welter of announcements the Swedish company made this morning: Its big news (in my view) is the relationship it has struck with Amazon Web Services Inc. . (See Ericsson, Amazon Web Services Get Jiggy.)

I didn't smell any coffee brewing at Canonical Ltd., the company best known for its Ubuntu brand. But there was something new to swallow -- a new acronym for the virtual networking world. Say hello to V-PIL, Canonical's VNF Performance Interoperability Lab. Having read the announcement about the Lab and its launch partners, I was tempted to note that IBM, Metaswitch and Affirmed Networks already appear to be on the V-PIL, but that could be regarded as somewhat childish…

Elsewhere I felt drawn to the SK Telecom (Nasdaq: SKM) stand, where a long line of people were queuing to be scared out of their wits in the operator's "Extreme Submarine," a "4D simulation experience" that transports the willing victims (in a virtual sense) into the murky depths. I decided to take a reality check…

We All Queue For a Yellow Submarine...
So now you'll have that song in your head for the rest of the day, right?

And finally, if you're looking for an image that's a little different from MWC this year, check out this complete accident of a photo that I took at the Samsung Networks booth -- well, less a booth and more a massive, glowing white box. It just doesn't look like that in my photos…
